Understanding Home Health Care

When I was diagnosed with a serious condition, I didn't know where to start with my treatment. Fortunately, my doctor recommended a great home health care company, and they came right in to take care of things. They were incredibly kind and caring, and before I knew it, I started to feel a lot better. I wanted to create a blog all about home health care to remove some of the misconceptions people have about the service. This blog is dedicated to creating an environment of healing right inside of your very home. Check out this blog for great information.

Therapies Offered By Home Health Services

Blog

In-home healthcare often involves a series of services and treatments. These services usually concern medication management, breathing treatments, or help with activities of daily living. The truth is that many home healthcare agencies also offer different therapies for their in-home health patients. Here are the therapies that are commonly offered through home health services and what to know about each one.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is one of the most common forms of in-home healthcare therapy available. Many doctors refer their patients to a physical therapist following a fall or other injury. This is to help the patient regain use of those body areas or to help reduce the chances of further injury to that area or loss of mobility over time. Many larger home healthcare agencies do offer in-home therapists through their company. Some of these options require doctor approval or referral for insurance purposes.

Speech Therapy

Speech therapy may be necessary if your loved one has had a stroke or other similar medical issue that has affected their ability to speak. Strokes can affect the mouth area as well as the vocal cords. Speech therapy can help with these issues. There is a misconception that speech therapy is only offered as an out-of-home treatment. The truth is that you can get this as an in-home health option, where the therapist will visit your loved one directly in the home. The therapy can last for an hour or longer, and the therapist can meet with your loved one one or more times per week depending on your loved one's needs.

Eating Therapy

Eating therapy is a less commonly discussed form of therapy. This type of therapy is ordered by a physician when a patient has had an issue that affects their ability to eat. The issue may disable the patient's ability to feed themselves properly or their ability to chew and swallow. A therapist will come in the home and help your loved one work slowly through these issues, so they can learn how to feed themselves or to eat normally again.

If your family member is in need of specific in-home healthcare therapies, discuss the options with your health agency. They can inform you of how to obtain the services, if insurance will cover the services, and what types of services your loved one can receive directly through the home health service. They can also discuss options with you that may work well for your loved one and their physical or other therapeutic needs.
