When Do Patients Need Hospice?
Typically, patients with six months or fewer to live are offered hospice care. There are facilities for this type of care, but some patients and their families prefer to keep the terminally ill at home.
A doctor can determine when an illness is no longer treatable and palliative care is the only treatment option. The patient's doctor and the hospice director decide when the patient receives this care. This care keeps patients as comfortable as possible and reduces suffering and pain in the last days.
What To Expect From In-Home Hospice
In-home hospice care includes regular visits from nurses. The nurses work with the family and patient to set up a schedule that works for everyone. Nurses are on-call 24 hours a day 7 days a week to answer questions and help out when needed.
Along with home health care, hospice services include social, emotional, and spiritual support for both patients and families.
What Is Respite Care?
The family members responsible for caring for a terminally ill loved one also need some time to care for themselves. Around the clock care becomes exhausting and challenging, so hospice services offer respite care for family members needing a break.
The hospice nurses can come into the home to provide continuous care for a period of time to let the family recoup. The family is already suffering from potential loss, so some time for themselves if good for their health and well-being.
What Does In-Home Hospice Cost?
Medicare and Medicaid cover the costs of in-home hospice care. Low-income families can expect full coverage and will not have to pay for any out-of-pocket expenses.
Nonprofit hospices do readily accept donations to help with expenses. Some families ask for donations after the death of their loved ones for the hospice facility that assisted them. These memorial donations help ensure other patients receive the best care possible.
Losing a loved one is never easy, and caring for them in the last days is also difficult both physically and emotionally. Hospice care is there to make this a little easier for everyone involved.
